Abstract: This research includes technological studies about one old method of gilding called amalgam gilding also known as mercury gilding and fire gilding. General issues of this research have been included in four chapters. Chapter one studies different types of gilding on metals and amalgam gilding has been introduced as a distinguished method in this research. Chapter two refers to history of this method and proceeds to collection of data about technique of using amalgam and manner of mercury gilding. Chapter three deals with amalgam gilding and the current samples have been compared with an old on as evidence. To this end, first metallography and then scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to study topography of coating and observing the joint section of coating and lower metal. In order technical studies, gold plate and the layer made in the space between the plate and lower layer has been analyzed by XRD method. Results of different studies led to identifying an alloying layer between the plate and base and forming a penetrable coat in mercury gilding. Chapter four introduces and analyzes damages, reasons of damages and factors which intensify them and a number of recommendations have been finally made to protect this technique.
